I wrote this blog from 2013 to 2023, but since then have had to give up writing due to a neurological condition, chronic vestibular migraine. This came about (ironically) through computer/screen (over) use.
I have worked in nature conservation since I started as a volunteer in the Summer of 1986, so coming up to 40 years. In that time I have worked for two wildlife trusts, and led the conservation work of Plantlife, Buglife and the Grasslands Trust. I have also done a lot of freelance work covering a wide range of issues from rare plant survey/monitoring/restoration strategies; site management plans, to helping create a multi-million pound HLF project on grasslands; to writing reports advocating the reform of wildlife legislation, agricultural policy. I have helped create a number of environmental NGOs. There were a couple of stints for English Nature/Natural England and Dorset AONB. After a brief time working for an environmental consultancy, I set up People Need Nature in 2015 (after a long gestation). I am now in the process of closing down People Need Nature (again because of the chronic migraine condition I have), to focus just on the Poundbury Nature Project, which I founded in 2019.
As well as writing for this blog, I wrote a blog for the Grasslands Trust for two year, contributed articles to Lush Times, before writing a weekly article for them from late 2017 to late 2019. I have written many reports for “grey literature”, not all of which have been published. I contributed a number of articles to British Wildlife over the years, and have co-authored two books, one on Arable Plants, and another on perceptions of nature in Churchyards. I have also helped (and continue to help) provide expert guidance to a number of authors writing their own books.
All in all it’s been quite a busy 40 years!
